Our vision of Capacity Development
Capacity Development (CD) is the process through which an organization develops the internal capacity to be the most effective it can be in achieving its mission and in sustaining itself over the long term. This definition highlights the explicit connection between CD and the achievement of organization mission. This connection is the rational for doing CD work. All financial support provided through the funding facilities will include a capacity development component. Capacity development activities will be identified by each organization with assistance from the relevant funding facility through facilitation of a capacity self assessment and guidance and advice in the creation of a capacity development plan. During the project period, PDP will assist each organization implement its capacity building plan through support for staff and Board training, coaching and mentoring and facilitating access to required technical expertise.
The basic core principles that will characterize the PDP's participatory approach to capacity development are:
- The goals and objectives of the organization are given priority.
- The process is completely controlled by the organization.
- The process engages all stakeholders of the organization.
- The process is realistic.
The facilities are guided by the Program's model for capacity development, which focuses on assisting supported associations, foundations or networks work toward enhanced:
- Skills in applying participatory approaches to project design and planning.
- Skills in applying results-oriented approaches to project design and delivery.
- Organizational management.
- Transparency and accountability to constituents and increased participation in the development of an organization's vision, strategic approaches and decision making.
- Financial management and sustainability.
Supported associations, foundations and networks are expected to ensure that sufficient time and human resources are made available to capacity development activities. In addition, organizations will be accountable to the funding facility for their progress in achieving capacity development objectives. This progress will be a key success indicator of their project.
