Values and Ethics in Development
National and International Views

May 10-11, 2009

Goal:
To promote a shared vision of a civil society committed to values and ethnics

Objectives:

  • To build consensus on approaches and strategies for the application of ethics and values in civil society programs and operations
  • To explore the role of government and donors in enhancing ethics and values in development and identify concrete strategies and recommendations

The agenda of the 3rd NGO Forum includes plenary debates and breakaway sessions based on three main thematic streams:

Stream 1:
"Funding Agencies" in Support of Ethics-based Civil Society
This stream aims to identify the best approaches that can strengthen resource management and increase transparency such that foreign and private sector contributions to CS can yield greater and more measurable results for those who need it most.
Topics under this stream include:

  • The growth of CSOs and changing attitudes within the international donor community and private sector regarding the role of CSOs in development

  • Reconciling international and local priorities

  • Future Trends of international development

Case Studies: (Egyptian – Arab – International)
The case studies will reflect the national, regional and international CSOs' effective initiatives to promote ethics and values in developmental sectors of:
  • SMEs and microfinance

  • Human Rights

  • Education

 

Stream 2:
"The Role of Government in Establishing an Enabling Environment for Civil Society and Ethical Practices "

This stream seeks to discuss the role of governments in fostering an enabling environment for civil society based on ethics and values

Topics include several case studies

  • The role of government agencies in promoting and facilitating ethics and values among all development actors, including CSOs

  • Policies and legal structures that contribute to the development of an enabling environment for government-CS cooperation

 

 

Stream 3:
“Toward Adoption of a Code of Ethics for Egyptian CSOs”

Within this stream, practitioners from all sectors will explore the role of ethical behavior, transparency and accountability in enhancing the credibility of CS based on empowerment and active citizenship.

Topics includes

  • The purpose of a universally accepted Codes of Ethics and Conduct for CSOs
  • Relevance , Challenges and Opportunities for Development of Action Plan for Adoption and Promotion of an Egyptian Code of Ethics and Conduct

 

 

Forum Knowledge Fair

Come to learn and share your experience!

The Forum will be a multi-dimensional experience and will provide opportunities for a number of relevant exhibition stands. Exhibitors will be able to profile their activities, services and products in the development space.

The Knowledge Fair will be held in the Octagonal Hall of Moevenpick Hotel, where a free table will be provided for each exhibitor based on the first come, the first served rule as space is limited.

The Forum Knowledge Fair is a great opportunity for us to explore what we have in common and what we can learn from each other. Exhibits include: books and publications (flyers, brochures, newsletters, magazines), researches, manuals, Training kits, posters, CDs, etc.

 

Participants

The Forum's program of plenary sessions, breakaway sessions and case studies will provide opportunities for NGOs, government agencies, corporate organizations, and international agencies to pool their knowledge and resources in a collective effort to build a strong framework for sharing knowledge for development.
